Communication

Cheiron obtains its strength from the communication of its members. In order for members to easily communicate with each other, Cheiron has a variety of mailing lists, and for efficiency reasons committers should be reachable through Skype.

The mailing lists, with the exception of the announcement lists, are not moderated and anybody is more than welcome to join them. However, you must be subscribed to post to a list. To join the mailing lists, see our mailing lists page.

For announcements people can subscribe to the Atom feed that publishes the same news items as can be read at Cheiron news.

Mailing lists

The following types of mailing lists are recognized:

User lists

User lists are for users of a product to converse about such things as configuration and operating of the product.

Developer lists

Developer lists are for the developers of the various projects. On these lists suggestions and comments for code changes are discussed and action items are raised and voted on. For the developer community, these lists are the very center of the project where all the 'action' is. For those that have no commit privileges code modifications in diff -u format can be sent to this list.

Skype

While the mailing list serves well for discussing features, bugs, etc., often a phone conversation between 2 or more contributors can achieve the same or better result in less time. Therefore for efficiency reasons we ask contributors to be reachable through Skype (in the future other VOIP solutions might be possible). At this time there is no policy with regard to connecting each other, for now it is expected to make an appointment when there is the need for a Skype conversation. In case some decision has been made through a Skype conversation people must post the outcome to the relevant mailing list as a way to keep the others informed and to let them have their say.
